ASCII

Reads data encoded according to the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII).

ASCII is a special coding convention for characters. It is the native character set of most minicomputers and all personal computers. The maximum length of an ASCII field is 32767 bytes. An ASCII field corresponds to an “X” in a COBOL PICTURE clause. For a description of the other major form of character data, see EBCDIC.
