Records and Fields

The first steps in learning about data analysis with Analyzer are understanding data file layouts and determining the kind of analysis you want to do.

Computers store data in files. Within files, data is often arranged in records and fields. If data files are displayed graphically, records are displayed as rows and fields are displayed as columns. A selected portion of data in a file can also be called a data set.

File - A collection of related records
Record - A collection of related fields
Field - A discrete item of information contained in a record.
